Gen Grant telegraphed that Sheridan with his cavalry
& the 5th Corps had captured 3 brigades of Infy,
a train of wagons, & several batteries,
prisoners amounting to several thousand.
this mng Grant having ordered an attack along the
whole line teleghs as follows “both Wright
and Parke got through the Enemy lines.
the battle now rages furiously. Sheridan
with his Cavalry, The 5th Corps and
Miles Division of the 2d Corps which was sent
to him since 1 AM this mng is now
sweeping down from the west all now
looks highly favorable Ord is engaged but
I have not yet heard the result in his front”

note to Capt. Penrose which is all he has heard
of him since you left – Copy

Less than two weeks before his death Abraham Lincoln sent this chatty telegram home to Mary Todd to let her know how the war was progressing. In addition to visiting with his General-in-Chief, Lincoln would have had an opportunity to see his son, Robert Todd Lincoln, who had recently joined General Grant’s staff as an Assistant Adjutant.
